What Life Story Are You Writing Today?
Whether we all realize it or not, we are building our legacy right now. Everything we do contributes to our own life story. And how long our legacy lasts depends on the people we affect today and what we choose to leave behind.
My father realized what a powerful thing a legacy can be. He was famous for TV and film, but wanted to leave behind a legacy of giving. That is why at the dedication of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in 1962, as the doors were opened he said, "I now know why I was born."
Dad could not bear to think that a child might die in the dawn of life. That is why he founded St. Jude – a place dedicated to finding cures and saving children. St. Jude is the premier center for the research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Children from all 50 states and around the world have come through the doors of St. Jude for treatment, and thousands more in this country and throughout the world have benefited from the research conducted at St. Jude – research that is shared freely with communities across America and the world. And no family ever pays St. Jude for treatment.
Today, we are closer than ever to realizing my father’s dreams. Cancer was once considered incurable, with less than 20 percent of children surviving the disease. Working together, our physicians and scientists have pioneered treatments that have helped push the overall survival rate for childhood cancers to more than 70 percent today. But we will not stop until we can assure every father and mother that their child will survive.
I hope you will consider making the life-saving mission of St. Jude a part of your personal legacy. Your life story can be a part of every child we save and every medical discovery we make. St. Jude will make a difference in the lives of countless children throughout the world because you made a difference to St. Jude.
This Web site tells you how you can join your legacy with our mission. There are many ways you can contribute to St. Jude – some can even supply you with regular income or provide you with valuable tax incentives. I think you will find it is as easy to give to St. Jude as it is rewarding. And if you have any questions, we have people who would be happy to help you with your gift planning needs.
From everyone here at St. Jude, and on behalf of my father, thank you for considering making the children of St. Jude a part of your ongoing legacy.
With sincere regards,
Tony Thomas
